Spring/Summer Graduation Ceremony – SAVE THE DATE
If you are graduating this spring or summer term, the history department would like to invite you to our department graduation ceremony, which will take place on:
Friday, May 8th
3pm-5pm
Wisconsin Historical Society
A formal invitation and RSVP will be sent out to all graduating majors next week. If you are interested in attending the ceremony, please fill out that RSVP as soon as you can as it helps us order food and figure out how many guests each graduate can bring based on space.
This invitation will go out to history majors who have applied to graduate for spring or summer term. If you are planning to graduate, and have not applied to graduate yet, please do so ASAP. This process only takes about 90 seconds to complete and can be found in your Student Center -> Academic Records -> Apply to Graduate.
History Department Scholarships Are Open!
The application period for the History Department’s scholarships and writing prizes is now open!

The History Department is Hiring Peer Advisors!

The Department of History will be hiring two qualified History Majors as Peer Advisors for the 2026-2027 academic year!  To be eligible, you must be willing to commit to working both Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 semesters, but it is possible to extend the position beyond next year for students who are not graduating in May 2027.  Training will be provided, and no prior advising experience is necessary, though it is a plus.  The deadline for applying is Monday, March 2nd. See attached application for more details!

Upcoming Phi Alpha Theta (PAT) Events!
February 25th- Conversation with Professor Badillo and Sofia Rivera
Professor Jorell Meléndez-Badillo is a leading historian of Puerto Rico, author of Puerto Rico: A National History, and the scholar behind the album of the year DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS‘ historical visuals. He will be joining us for a conversation with graduate student, Sofia Rivera, on Puerto Rico and the Importance of Public History from 6:30-7:30PM in the Curti Lounge (5233 Mosse Humanities)!
March 11th- Lecture Talk with Professor Bloch
 Professor Brandon Bloch will be joining up for a guest lecture on his recent book, Reinventing Protestant Germany: Religious Nationalists and the Contest for Post-Nazi Democracy. This event will take place from 6:30-7:30PM in the Curti Lounge (5233 Mosse Humanities)! As always, snacks will be provided!
 
April 19th- Undergraduate Research Symposium
Do you have original, historical research to share? Join us at the Symposium from 2:00-5:00pm at Memorial Union (room TBA) to share your research with your fellow majors and certificates. We urge those of you who are currently taking or have previously taken a Hist 201, Hist 401, Hist 500, Hist 600, or senior thesis project to share your research! This event will be catered, and even if you are not presenting, we would love to see you there!

Executive Board Applications are open! Applications for the 2026-27 Phi Alpha Theta Executive Board will close on March 4th. In order to be considered for the 2026-27 Executive Board, you must be inducted by the end of this school year. Please email us with any questions regarding board applications.

Join the Contemporary International Relations Association (CIRA) on Monday, February 23rd, from 1-3pm in Memorial Union Multicultural Greek Council Room (4th Floor) for our Professors, Politics, and Pastries Networking Event!
This event will feature over 20 professors from more than 6 disciplines on campus, including experts on each region of the world. Free food will also be served, and this event is flexible to your schedule, meaning you can arrive and depart at your convenience.

L&S is Hiring SOAR Peer Advisors

 
L&S is hiring SOAR Student Staff for Summer 2026. Peer Advisors play a key role in welcoming new students, helping them understand degree requirements, and supporting their first course enrollment. It’s a great opportunity to grow professionally, work closely with L&S staff, and impact new students.

 

Quick details:

  • Pay: $15/hour, expect 15-20 hours per week
  • Dates: Training begins May 18; SOAR runs June–August
  • Hours: Mostly weekday mornings; no weekends

Become a Writing Fellow
The Writing Center is hiring Writing Fellows!
Writing Fellows are a diverse group of highly motivated undergraduate students from all majors (not just English) who participate in a peer tutoring program that places undergraduates in positions of intellectual leadership. Through this role, you would have the opportunity to serve as a role model for other students on campus, gain invaluable experience as a reader and writer, conduct and present original research, and receive a scholarship of $1100 per semester.

Office of Rep. Mark Pocan – Summer Internships
The District Office of Congressman Mark Pocan is now accepting applicants for our summer internship. The deadline for summer applications is April 3rd, 2026.
Interns will be engaged in a variety of activities in the Congressional Office that focuses on constituent services.
Candidates should possess:
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Positive attitude
Intern responsibilities include:
  • Answering telephones
  • Processing constituent letters
  • Drafting correspondence to constituents
Opportunities exist for interns to focus on a specific area of interest. Applicants must be able to devote a minimum of 10 hours per week. Internships are unpaid. Students from all backgrounds and academic majors are welcome to apply.

Princeton Historical Review

 

The Princeton Historical Review, Princeton’s biannual undergraduate historical journal, is seeking submissions for its Summer 2026 issue. We welcome all submissions that treat a historical subject and involve analysis of primary sources. To read past issues and get a sense of the pieces we publish, please see our website.

 

To be considered, upload your paper as a Word document using the link below. All submissions should be between 10 and 50 double-spaced pages (excluding bibliography), should include Chicago-style footnotes and a bibliography that distinguishes between primary and secondary sources, and should not feature your name anywhere on the document.

Submissions are due Sunday, March 1, 2026 @ 11:59 PM EST. Accepted authors will work with a team of readers over a two-stage editing process to prepare their articles for publication in June.

Showcase Your Work at the 2026 Undergraduate Symposium

The 2026 Undergraduate Symposium application is open! Apply by 11:59pm on Friday, March 6th to present your research, scholarly work, community-based project, art, or creative endeavor at this annual campus-wide showcase and celebration of undergraduate achievement. All UW-Madison undergraduates are eligible to participate.

The 2026 Undergraduate Symposium will be held on Friday, April 17th at Union South and the Discovery Building.
